This is the most important step and the first place where most people fail
Finding a niche is where I use Market Samurai to do most of my research. You can do the research using free tools (and I have in the past) but after I downloaded the free trial and used it, I bought it instantly. With my initial keyword idea of tennis ball gun I instantly created a total of 57 keyword ideas with Market Samurai. Next I click the Analyze Keywords button to determine how many searches these terms receive.

***This is the most important concept to remember***

You need a keyword phrase that is searched frequently before you decide to devote time and resources to develop a website within that niche. This is where
most people fail. They simply buy a domain name with some related product words and right off the bat aren’t targeting a phrase that people search for.
So many people fail in this manner, but don’t worry I made this mistake too!

4b. Determining the Search Volume for a Keyword Phrase

So after I look at the results after clicking Analyze Keywords I can tell that if I want to stick to this niche idea of a tennis ball gun it’s actually not the best keyword phrase to target. In fact, tennis ball launcher is better at 398 searches a day compared to 178 searches a day for tennis ball gun Super Affiliate Coaching Club bonus:

Now I can look at GoDaddy.com to determine if tennisballlauncher.com is available (it’s not); however, there are a few more steps I go through first.

(I would have also settled for the .org or .net, but after looking for the name I can see that my first choices are taken.)
Why not take thetennisballlauncher.com instead? Well, it does have the keywords in the name but in my experience I’ve found it much easier to rank in search engines with the exact phrase in the domain name.
So for the sake of the example I’ll just move down to the next most frequently searched phrase like “tennis ball cannon”:
The .com is a premium name at $1,499 which is way overpriced so the .org is fine.

Yes – I did do one step out of order, but I did so to prove a point. First you should determine the competition for a keyword phrase before looking to buy a domain name because if it’s too difficult to rank for a target phrase there is no point in buying the domain (to resell I suppose but we won’t discuss that here). I
knew that my first choice of tennisballlauncher.com/.net/.org etc. wasn’t available so I wanted to use that as an opportunity to teach a lesson on why you shouldn’t settle for bad extensions or something like thetennisballlauncher.com.

Ok with that long winded explanation out of the way I’ll show you how I determine if it will be possible for me to rank for this keyword using the SEO competition tool from Market Samurai.
